Music Video Genres

There are 5 different types of music genres which are:

+  Image
+ Narrative
+ Performance
+ Personal
+ Spectical

Within the 5 different types of music genres come different types of music such as Pop, Rock or Soul.

Types of music that belong to the Image genre include Pop music and girl bands such as Girls Aloud and Little Mix and One Direction or Union J.
The types of music that belong to the Narrative music include Indie music with Kodaline.
Within the Performance genre you have bands such as Kings of Leon that belong to the Rock genre. Also within performance you can have Pop music with boy bands such as One Direction or Take That.
Personal music can include a lot of different music types such as Rap with Eminem or Soft Rock with artists such as Adele.
Spectical can also include a lot of different genres such as Rock with Red Hot Chili Peppers or Pop with Lady Gaga.


Mark Reid argues that genre changes based on what you are told, also known as the tomato pureé theory.

David Broadwell argues that the audience, rather than the director chooses the genre of the music.  


We decided to take 4 of the different genres of music and take pictures of what we think a conventional music video within that genre would look like.

The first one we took was of a girl on the stairs with her tounge out and positioning her hand in the rock pose to make her look like she is crazy. We chose to do it on the stairs because it isn't a typical place to have a music video and it falls well into the category of Specital.

The second picture we took was of a boy band with all the boys lined up together with their arms around each other. They are all wearing stylish clothes and are smiling or posing to make themselves have more appeal to younger girls which is similar to Union J or One direction and fall into the Image genre.

To infinity and beyond

I am now in Year 13 doing A2 Media in which we are going to create a music video of our own after looking at lots of different genres of music videos.
